Rolling Calf
The Bull That Blocks the Road
The Rolling Calf is a creature of raw terror — a massive, spectral bull that materializes on lonely roads after midnight. Its eyes blaze with hellfire. Heavy chains are wound around its body, clanking and scraping against the ground as it moves. Some say it breathes actual fire. Others say its bellowing can be heard from miles away, freezing the blood of anyone who hears it.
The Rolling Calf is said to be the spirit of a person who was exceptionally wicked in life — a butcher who cheated customers, a plantation owner who was cruel to workers, a thief who never repented. Upon death, their soul is condemned to roam the earth in this monstrous form, blocking roads and terrorizing travelers as punishment for their sins.
When you encounter a Rolling Calf, it will stand in the middle of the road, filling the path entirely, refusing to let you pass. Its eyes bore into you. The chains rattle. The temperature drops. Many who have met the Rolling Calf simply turn and run, finding another way home — if they can.
To get past a Rolling Calf, you can try whipping it with a tarred whip, or dropping an open Bible in the road. Some say you must approach it backwards while reciting Psalm 23. Others say nothing works — you simply must wait until dawn, when it dissolves like smoke.
In "Shadows In The Trade Winds," the Rolling Calf represents the unavoidable consequences of a life lived without conscience — the debts that follow you even beyond death.
