Danger:

Mama D'Leau

The Mother of the Water

Mama D'Leau — "Mother of the Water" — is the fearsome guardian of the rivers, waterfalls, and streams of the Caribbean. From the waist up, she is a strikingly beautiful woman with long, dark hair that flows like water itself. From the waist down, she is an enormous anaconda, her powerful coils slipping silently through the current.

She is Papa Bois's companion and equal — where he guards the forest, she guards the water. Together, they maintain the balance of the natural world. But while Papa Bois might merely get you lost, Mama D'Leau's punishments are far more severe.

Fishermen who take too many fish, people who dump waste in rivers, anyone who disrespects the waterways — these are the targets of Mama D'Leau's wrath. She will capsize boats, create sudden whirlpools, or simply drag the offender beneath the surface. Those she takes are never seen again.

But she can also be generous. Respectful fishermen find their nets full. Travelers who treat the rivers with reverence always find clean water to drink. She has been known to appear to warn people of floods or dangerous currents, saving lives as readily as she takes them.

Some say if you see an unusually beautiful woman sitting by a river combing her hair, you should leave quietly and not look back. If she catches your eye, she may offer you a choice: serve her forever in her underwater realm, or carry her message of respect for the water back to the village.

In "Shadows In The Trade Winds," Mama D'Leau embodies the life-giving and life-taking power of water itself — nurturing and destructive in equal measure.
